Electric Vehicles to Star at Frakfurt Motor Show

Everybody’s buzzing about the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, but it’s not the flashy, expensive cars that are getting all the love — it’s the next wave of electric vehicles.

Only one electric vehicle on the show floor is ready for production, a Renault hatchback that won’t be sold in the States any time soon. But check out this list of things to come, all of which will make their debuts as concept cars this week:

  • Audi R8 electric sports car
  • BMW Vision EfficientDynamics plug-in hybrid sports car
  • Mercedes SLS AMG electric sports car
  • Peugeot RCZ electric coupe
  • Peugeot 3008 electric minivan
  • Renault electric small car
  • Renault Megane electric car
  • Renault Kangoo electric small car
  • Volkswagen electric car

There will also be a 1-liter diesel-powered small car concept from Volkswagen, which while not electric, would get something like 230 mpg.

Whenever scientists, heads of governments and automakers start believing that the “silver bullet” of a clean transportation dwells in the stationary infrastructure, rather than in the sophistication of energy storage systems, we will have this EV puzzle solved for good. They could be cranking out EVs. with lead-acids, like EV-1, and sell them for under $20K- gvt. incentives=>$10K. Who wouldn’t buy it?
